One of the challenges facing young people today is the lack of economic, financial and media literacy and the lack of opportunities to develop this knowledge and skills, without which they find it difficult to participate actively and effectively in the community. This challenge poses a particular risk in the current social and economic circumstances, where unemployment is expected to rise and living standards to fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Accordingly, the project «Citizens for 5!» Was designed, which aims to strengthen the democratic culture, civic awareness and civic engagement of young people through the development and implementation of civic education programs in three areas: a) economic, financial and media literacy, b) personal and social development and c) sustainable development. The project holder is the Institute for the Development of Education, which implements the project in cooperation with Štedopis, the Croatian Debate Society, Humanum, Norsensus Mediaforum (Norway – the donor country of the project) and nine partner primary and secondary schools.
As part of the project, educational programs in the field of financial literacy, sustainability and personal development will be designed and developed, in which schools from Bjelovar-Bilogora, Sisak Moslavina, Virovitica-Podravina, Osijek-Baranja, Požega-Slavonia, Vukovar-Srijem and
Split-Dalmatia County. In addition to educational programs, an e-textbook on civic education will be designed and published. Students will be involved in educational workshops, debates and online quizzes to develop knowledge and skills for equal and active participation in economic processes and the creation of new solutions in their communities.
The project will include 40 teachers who will develop their knowledge of teaching young people about economic, financial and media literacy and will be able to continue teaching their students on these topics after the project. In addition, the project will include 45 members of vulnerable groups (young Roma, the elderly on the brink of poverty and students belonging to national minorities) for whom specialized educational programs tailored to their specific needs will be developed. Volunteers working with these groups will strengthen their knowledge of financial literacy to continue to apply what they have learned in their future work.
Based on this project, which includes research on the effectiveness of created educational programs, the Institute for the Development of Education will formulate recommendations for improving educational processes in the field of civic education.
